This personalized illustration needed to combine the client’s love of trains, his 50th birthday, and the Southwest. The train in the illustration is the Super Chief, which ran from Los Angeles to Chicago. This client has businesses in both Chicago and Los Angeles. I incorporated his last name on the train as well as the 50th. I incorporated his likeness into the Southwest rock formation.
The customer wanted this personalized illustration to be a surprise birthday customized illustration – it was for a friend she had not been in contact with for many, many years. She gave me a list of elements, and I chose 3 of them. The elements were a reference to California and Florida, so I turned that into the star outlined map of the USA, with the two states being a reddish color that stands out. She wanted the name of school they attended, Phillippi Shores, seen as smoke rising from the kettle. She wanted the date of their mutual birthday, March 13, seen on the kettle itself. I placed a caricature of her face in the crystal ball. The whole feeling of this illustration was to be whimsical and mysterious.
The client wanted this personalized illustration to be a surprise birthday customized illustration for her husband. It was his 50th birthday, and his favorite cake is chocolate, so I made the “50” as candles on his chocolate birthday cake. She wanted elements such as a shark, Morocco, Giraffe, surfing, and the beach. I illustrated a shark on a beach with a Fez on, holding a surfboard saying “Happy Birthday,” with a tent on the sand with a Moroccan flag atop a tent, and a Giraffe popping out.
